It’s dark in the cafe
the piano falls apart
my suitcase is on fire
the waitress playing cards
the band plays only half the notes
they started far too late
it’s not that they don’t know the tunes
it’s just they’re underpaid

The crowd is getting crazy
they’ll start to sing real soon
the cops will come complaining that
they’re singing out of tune
the leader of the band –
he’s sleeping at the bar
he never sees the daylight and
he drinks out of a jar

Then suddenly an apparition
walks into the bar
she buys a drink and then she seems
to smile from afar
and then she’s standing next to me
and asking for a light
and telling me that this won’t be
an ordinary night

Now with my apparition
we wandered through the town
she told me strange and wondrous things
we watched the moon go down
and then she took me to a place where I had never been
but that’s another story
that I better not begin ...
